With the launch of the next Xbox dashboard update will come a slight change to the proportions of the Avatars. These changes were made to allow better mapping between players with using Kinect to control their avatars. Existing avatar clothing and other assets have been updated to work properly with these new proportions.
For games that include support for Avatars, read the following thread in our Forums to understand how these changes affect games made with XNA Game Studio 3.1 and 4.0, and the changes that you can expect when XNA Game Studio Connect for 4.0 goes final.
Forums: Update to Avatar Proportions in XNA Game Studio 4.0
We encourage you to post any questions you may have directly to the thread; we want to make sure this change goes smoothly for everyone's games.

During my last month at Big Fish Games, I made a mini-game called Berry Blast in Action Script 3. It’s one of those “bubble shooter”-type games. The mini-game was added to Big Fish’s My Tribe game on Facebook as a collectible decoration that you can play every day to compete with friends for the best score in one minute (Bejewelled Blitz style).
If you want to play it, you’ll have to start playing My Tribe (which I also worked on as part of a team) and collect a few crates until you get the Berry Blast mini-game decoration. It’s a common item so shouldn’t take too long to find. Also there are 3 other great mini-games made by other team members: a match-3, a pachinko-style game, and a spot the difference game (one of many design ideas I came up with that a co-worker did a really great job of).
Berry Blast was good fun to make, and had lots of little complexities that I tried to get right to ensure that it played well, and I think I did a good job because it’s fun and rewarding to play. I actually left just before the game was finished. It was functionally complete when I left, with placeholder 8-bit sounds (made with SFXR) and a few pieces of final art. Then a co-worker plugged in the final graphics and sounds and hooked it up to the My Tribe mini-game framework that handles all the competitive scoring and Facebook sharing etc. I think he even fixed a couple of small bugs, ahem
It may only be a mini-game, but I was proud of it because I coded it from scratch in AS3 and learned a lot about the language along the way, and even made a neat little AS3 game framework (Big Fish owns the code, so I can’t share it, sorry).
If you manage to find Berry Blast in a crate and play it, please let me know what you thought!

You may have seen the announcement earlier today about the upcoming Visual Basic CTP for the Windows Phone Developer Tools. This Community Technical Preview is an opportunity for developers to get an early preview of the Silverlight app-building experience for Windows Phone 7 using Visual Basic.
To clarify, this Visual Basic CTP is for Silverlight only - it is not compatible with XNA Game Studio.
If you would like to take this CTP for a spin and try your hand at Silverlight app development on Windows Phone 7 with Visual Basic, please note that you'll need Visual Studio 2010 Professional or higher (a free trial is available) - not the Express edition - and have the latest Windows Phone Developer Tools installed.
At this time, we are not announcing any future plans for Visual Basic support in XNA Game Studio. As always, if we have news to report, we'll share it with you on the XNA Creators Club Online website at http://creators.xna.com.

The Xbox LIVE Indie Games Submission pipeline on App Hub is now open for Xbox 360 games made using XNA Game Studio 4.0. You can submit your XNA Game Studio 4.0 games for Xbox 360 to the Peer Review process on App Hub right away.
For XNA Game Studio 3.1 games still in development, you have a limited window of 90 days - starting from today - to continue to submit games made in XNA Game Studio 3.1. We will be posting reminders as we get closer to the 90-day deadline. XNA Game Studio 3.1 games submitted during this time will continue to work after the 90-day period.
The last day to submit XNA Game Studio 3.1 Games: Monday, February 7th, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST
Today’s update also means changes to XNA Game Studio Connect, which you can use for deploying and debugging your XNA Game Studio projects in progress. Read on to find out how these changes may affect you.
If you have a XNA Game Studio 3.0 or 3.1 game currently on Xbox LIVE Indie Games, it will continue to work. This release does not affect the ability to purchase or play any game currently on Xbox LIVE Indie Games.
If you are developing a game for... | Using... | The impact is... |
---|---|---|
Xbox LIVE Indie Games | XNA Game Studio 4.0 | You can submit your game to the Peer Review process right now. |
Xbox LIVE Indie Games | XNA Game Studio 3.1 | You will have 90 days starting from today to submit the game to the Peer Review process on App Hub as an XNA Game Studio 3.1 game. The last day to submit will be Monday, February 7th, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST. If you upgrade your game to use XNA Game Studio 4.0, this deadline does not apply. You will still be able to deploy and debug your game in XNA Game Studio Connect 4.0, even if your game is using XNA Game Studio 3.1. The deadline is only for submissions, not for 3.1 games that are on Xbox LIVE Indie Games. Therefore, if you successfully submit your XNA Game Studio 3.1 game to Xbox LIVE Indie Games before the deadline, it will continue to be available to customers on Xbox LIVE Indie Games after the deadline. |
Xbox 360 | XNA Game Studio 2.0 or 3.0 | You will be unable to debug or deploy to XNA Game Studio Connect starting today. We encourage you to upgrade your project to XNA Game Studio 4.0 if you wish to continue work on it using XNA Game Studio Connect. |
Windows | XNA Game Studio 2.0, 3.0, 3.1, 4.0 | You can continue as normal – this update does not affect Windows development using any version of XNA Game Studio. |

Point-and-click adventure master Amanita Design has revealed what its currently working on - and it turns out that the guys are rather busy. In an interview with the lovely people at PC Gamer, details regarding three new games are divulged.
Osada is an interactive music video that is looking rather psychedelic, and will be landing in your web browser in the next couple of weeks for free. Next up is Botanicula, a more traditional point-and-clicker featuring five creatures who set out to save their home land from evil. That's due out by the end of the year.
But here's the big one - Samorost 3 is also on the way, and is promised to be bigger and more polished than the previous releases. There are no screenshots or release date as of yet, although it's believed that the game is at least two whole years away from release. Yikes.
The final chunk of Amanita Design news is regarding 2009's robot adventure game Machinarium. The devs have confirmed that the game is currently being ported over to PlayStation 3, after originally being rejected by Microsoft for Xbox 360. Read up on our review to see why you should care.

Until 11:59 PM PST on February 7th, 2011, developers creating games for Xbox LIVE Indie Games can continue to submit their games made in XNA Game Studio 3.1 to peer review on App Hub.
Beginning at 12:00 AM PST on February 8th, 2011, only games made in XNA Game Studio 4.0 will be accepted to peer review; any games submitted that are made in XNA Game Studio 3.1 or any earlier version will not be accepted by the system.
When the restriction goes into effect, games already in the peer review process will not be affected. However, developers who expect to enter peer review near the deadline should use caution: the restriction applies to all games entering the peer review process – regardless of whether they are being submitted for the first time, resubmitted after failing peer review, or are updates to games already on Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
For instance – submitting an XNA Game Studio 3.1 game to peer review on 11:58 PM PST on February 7th is allowed, and while in peer review, the game will not be removed or changed in any way by the restriction. If the game passes peer review, it will enter Xbox LIVE Marketplace. If the game fails after the restriction is in effect, the developer must upgrade the title to XNA Game Studio 4.0 before resubmitting.
Submissions of updates to existing games in Xbox LIVE Marketplace are also subject to the restriction; any updates to existing games after the deadline must be made in XNA Game Studio 4.0, even if the existing game was made in XNA Game Studio 3.1.
If you are developing a game in XNA Game Studio 3.1, you will still be able to deploy and debug the game on your Xbox 360 console using XNA Game Studio Connect after the deadline, but you will be unable to submit it for playtest or peer review unless you upgrade the game project to XNA Game Studio 4.0.
If you have a XNA Game Studio 3.0 or 3.1 game currently on Xbox LIVE Indie Games, it will continue to work. This release does not affect the ability to purchase or play any game currently on Xbox LIVE Indie Games.

The designer of PC role-playing game Melolune is hosting a soundtrack sale for her music from Plants vs Zombies. The game's soundtrack album can be downloaded for a reduced price at Laura Shigihara's Bandcamp page through March 27th, with all of the proceeds benefiting relief efforts in Japan, via MercyCorps. Donations will go toward providing food and shelter for quake survivors.
Also announced earlier today, chip music community 8bitpeoples has added a 23-track compilation of Bit Shifter arrangements to their online store. Titled "Reformat: A Tribute To Bit Shifter's Information Chase," the compilation was organized by Michael Lerman back in October. All profits from sales of the CD will go to Japan earthquake and Pacific tsunami relief via the American Red Cross.
Bit Shifter's music is featured on Gaijin Games' soundtracks for Bit.Trip Beat and Bit.Trip Flux, while the Reformat compilation includes arrangements by Coova, litte-scale, Glomag, Random, Bud Melvin, IAYD and Magic Hammer, among other artists.
