U.S. weighs new sanctions against Syria

The Obama administration said Monday that it was studying possible new sanctions and other unilateral measures against Syria, as members of the U.N. Security Council were expected to gather to talk about the renewed crackdown by Damascus.

The White House has been pressing for a stronger international response to the Syrian assault despite reluctance from key allies in the region who fear that the departure of President Bashar al-Assad would lead to prolonged instability or possibly civil war.

Numerous administration and congressional officials condemned the new violence and, as the European Union expanded sanctions on Syrian government officials, some prodded Obama to take a stronger stance.
